Competition Obedience

What is Competition Obedience?

Competition Obedience tests precision behaviors ranging from sits to scent discrimination. All dogs begin with a perfect score of 200 from which “faults” are deducted as decided upon by the presiding judge. Precision is a key element as such things as slightly crooked sits or slight forging while heeling can result in point deductions. A score of 170 or higher is a qualifying score or “leg”. Legs accumulate to earn titles and allow the team to progress to more advanced levels of competition.

Behaviors taught and tested, include: Sit, Heel, Front, Finish, Come, Down, Retrieve, Directed Retrieve, Retrieve Over Jumps, Broad Jump, High Jump, Scent Discrimination and Go Out.

Watching a handler/dog team in perfect “heel” position, can be like watching poetry in motion.

Originally intended as an extension of pet dog training, Competition Obedience has evolved to a widely practiced art and can result in a very special bond between handler and dog.

Who Can Play?

Anyone and any dog. While the AKC (American Kennel Club) and the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) require competing dogs to be “purebred,” all breeds and mixes can compete in UKC (United Kennel Club) events.
