Rally Obedience

What is Rally Obedience?

Dogs and handlers negotiate a “course” consisting of between 10 & 20 (depending on the competition level) “stations.” Dog and handler teams move from station to station at a brisk pace in “heel” position. Each station is a sign with instruction as to which skill is to be performed. Skills include; Sit-Down-Sit, Figure 8, Send Over Jump, a 180 or 270 Degree Turn, Weaving Through Cones, and others. Depending upon the level, dogs are on leash or off leash. “Runs” are judged and qualifying scores become “legs” toward titles.

The really terrific thing about Rally is that handlers are allowed, even encouraged, to talk to and praise their dogs while performing. Scoring is less rigorous than traditional Competition Obedience.

Within the AKC program, Rally provides a link between the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program to Competition Obedience and Competition Agility programs.

Who Can Play?

Everyone!

Rally Obedience can be played by everyone and every dog. Only the AKC requires that competitors be “purebred.” The APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) and CARO (Canadian Association of Rally Obedience) also offers Rally competitions. Check out the following websites for more info:
